Lessons From an All-Women Yoga Council
The WICCI KA Yoga Council is a unique council that is working on shining a light on female yoga teachers in Karnataka. When women come together there is rarely something they can’t do. Our council is testament to this fact. We started out as disparate individuals busy with our classes, families, other things and today we are a bunch of women motivated to uplift others. The behind the scenes work of women on the Council are also teachers who are working behind the scenes, who deserve recognition.
The Council today consists of women motivated to work for a cause larger than themselves. No one is under the false impression that only by virtue of their talent, position, education, passion, money, motivation, discipline…can real long-lasting change be achieved. In the past few months we have brainstormed, coordinated, planned and executed together to lay the foundation to co-create meaningful work. This is evident in the creation of teams which are in sync with each other, seamless Insta lives we have organized, and the creation of an exciting calendar for the year. Suffice it to say we are as excited about our plans as the yoga community will be.
When so many brilliant and motivated women come together there are bound to be differences of opinion. It’s been wonderful to work with a group of women who are able to work towards a common vision regardless of differences and even setbacks. The Council is emerging as one that consistently strives towards our shared vision, which is important to drive real change. Whether it’s brainstorming content or community building ideas - we’ve maintained razor sharp focus, which is refreshing.
Members of the Council are all on a voluntary, part-time basis. It is heartening to see us enthusiastically making time for Council projects. We’ve struck a jackpot because council members have been able to skillfully manage their personal work with their professional lives and the work of the Council. We demonstrate that it’s not about one strong woman, but a bunch of women feeding off of each other’s energy and goodwill.
After all, it’s not what we do by and for ourselves, but what we do collectively that matters.
